👴👵Scam Watch:
Beware of 'Digital Arrest' Frauds
Recent reports highlight a concerning scam targeting seniors, known as the 'digital arrest' fraud. In this scheme, scammers impersonate law enforcement or government officials, claiming that a package linked to the victim contains illegal items. They coerce victims into transferring large sums of money to avoid arrest. A notable case involved a 77-year-old woman defrauded of over $450,000.
Protect Yourself:
Verify Identities: Always confirm the caller’s identity by contacting the official organization directly.
Avoid Immediate Actions: Do not act hastily on threats or demands for money.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam, contact local authorities or consumer protection agencies immediately.
Health Alert:
Thyroid Medication Linked to Bone Loss
A recent study from Johns Hopkins Medicine has found that levothyroxine, a commonly prescribed medication for hypothyroidism, may be associated with increased bone loss in older adults. The research indicates that even individuals with normal thyroid function experienced significant bone density reduction over six years while on the medication.
Recommendations:
Consult Your Doctor: If you're taking levothyroxine, discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
Bone Health Monitoring: Regular bone density tests can help monitor changes and manage risks effectively.
